Growing Home has partenered with Migrant Education Program (Migrant Ed.) to give weekly health workshops throughout the summer. Migrant Ed. is based out of a community center one block away from the Growing Home plots. They have an amazing summer program for the children of refugee families, but often elders and caregivers are left home alone during day. These new health workshops that focus on life skills, and incorporate English lessons are ways to engage and educate the rest of the family.
So far, Growing Home has hosted two health classes. While only 10 community members showed up to the first class, 50 came for the following week. The workshops have covered what to do in an emergency, how to dial 911 and explain problems in basic English, and what options refugees have once their health insurance ends. This week the lesson will focus on dental health and the farmers will receive free toothbrushes!
