After many months of meetings with the city to secure land, raising funds, community meetings, and garden planning – we have finally begun clearing our first vacant lots.
These lots were once homes that over time became abandoned and collapsed. A small playground and parked was built on a few of the lots. However, the playground was bulldozed when a couple more houses came down and the property has sat vacant and not maintained for over a decade. Philadelphia Parks and Recreation has been kind enough to give us a lease on the land and allow work to begin!
We started by clearing over 40 bags full of trash with the help of volunteers and neighbors. Next, I hired a friend to help me take down the overgrown weed trees filling the lot. Photos are after trees were removed.
